After months of deliberation, my husband and I decided to pull the plug on a huge chunk of cable channels. Everything beyond channel 20 disappeared yesterday just moments after I called Comcast and demanded a downgrade to Basic cable. They tried everything to keep us on our triple play plan, offering us promotion after promotion. I finally told them enough with the deals, we just want less tv.
We still have our ipods, internet, aim, email, video games and cell phones. Isn’t that enough? I hear it now — the groans of tv withdrawal. The lifeline to Miley, Carly and Bikini Bottom cutoff at the jugular. Here’s a little synopsis of our life without 200+ channels of tv.
Day Two on Basic Cable: Children sitting in family room early Sunday morning watching the only cartoon available, a Spanish dubbed Jimmy Neutron. Husband and I look on from kitchen enjoying every minute of it.
Later that day: Children take advantage of the great outdoors, without being told to do so. Skateboards, bikes, scooters… ahh…and look..my children…cruising down the hill.

Outdoors at the frog pond.

Hey that is the way we all grew up and we are fine…The only time Amando was able to sneak in cable was when he went to a friends house…We just didn’t want to deal with all the screening…Much like your review on The Dark Night…It actually brings family together,,especially watching Jimmy Neutron in Spanish…lol Good Job parents…

Wow that’s brave.
We’ve been thinking the same thing in my house, as we only really watch the main terrestial channels anyway. I like having the option there though!

Wow… that is quite a step! I would love to be able to do that, but we are way to addicted to TV
I think I need a 12-step program here. Wonder if any of the cable channels have one…

Good for you! I honestly think none of us would miss it as much as we think we would. Sometimes I think we are just “keeping up with the Jones” by having to have all these conveniences and luxuries.

Good for you! Would love to do it, but I don’t think I could do without my BBC America.

I think anyone can go cable-free. I watch absolutely everything either online, or if I’m desperate, I download it on iTunes. I think this is the easiest cutback we can all make! And your kids didn’t waste anytime finding a new past time!!!

So happy I’m no longer the only one who will be showing iTunes visualizer on Friday nights. Admittedly, not having cable was initially a function of being a college student, a very poor college student. Afterwards I think it became a matter of being too confused about all the cable options. I think I’ve survived on less-than-basic-cable for 20 years now. Watching cable movies at friends’ homes and What Not to Wear at mom & dad’s are certainly still cravings, but just like junk food, if it’s not in your home, you won’t eat it up!
ps i imagined the girls & e staring blankly at the spanish dub and gave out a loud chuckle!
