“Don’t drop the laptop!” These are the words I speak, and sometimes rather loudly, to my children everyday as they are on the computer more than I. They are also much more adept at the gadget than I. The computer is just an extension of their fingertips it seems. This blog thing is about the most exciting thing I’ve done on a computer recently. Being the authority figure that I am, never mind my lack of computer genius, I feel it necessary to remind them daily, many times daily, that utmost care must be taken when handling the laptop. Given as a gift to my eldest daughter last Xmas, it has been a nice addition to our family. No more waiting in line at our one computer, our lovely mac bought in 2004 now out dated since the recent updates to Leopard and iLife… Anyway, the laptop was dropped the other day. Not by my children, not by my husband, but by ME. Yes, I dropped it as I carelessly pulled it out of it’s case with my fingertips, I almost saw it coming, then bam, crash on the floor. At first it appeared as if nothing was wrong then I realized the computer wasn’t charging and lost complete power. Apparently, I knocked something out of place. It’s on its way to Texas for repairs with a three to four week waiting period. Luckily it’s still under warranty. Bad news is because it didn’t have any power left I couldn’t backup any data. Now all documents could be lost forever. Mom (my mother-in-law) I should have listened to you and backed up all our stuff or at least made hard copies of them. AAAAAAH!
This stinks.

It is painful when something happens to our all important laptop ..For computers are more than just… pass the time by… play games when I’m bored…what’s happening in the world..They are our connection and extension of precious words, ideas in ways we could never imagine… and in seconds bring us together through words and one click on the keyboard..People are personal about their computers if only for that moment, minute or hour that they can sneak in the time when they are the ones that matter..I know I feel that way too…So I feel your pain knowing that you will be seperated from your machine of artistic freedom and license…Hopefully there are computer angels somewhere that will protect the data and bring your precious laptop home safely with information intact..So any computer angels out there hope you are reading this blog…

I feel your pain. I tell my children daily not to drag the laptop across the table, do not drop it when you are carrying it across the room, etc….. I love my laptop. I feel as if was and still is another arm or a part of me. I haven’t used my old, sorry Compaq desktop computer in years. I bought my little Dell laptop to get me through college with my online classes. What a lifesaver. I will definetly buy another laptop in the future. One that is bigger and fancier! For now, my little Dell will do.

Oh, Hazel…I understand completely! Who would have thought that this small hunk of technology could cause such strife? And while it affords us the ability to do so much, it also makes me pause and feel nostalgia for the simpler days, when writing letters and receiving letters brought such joy, excitement; when hearing a good friend’s voice instead of hearing the fingerclicks on keyboard or cell phone was the norm. But don’t get me wrong! Sentiments aside, I completely freaked out when my pc lap top went up in smoke. Literally! I, too, neglected to backup any data. However, I was informed by several of my computer savvy MIT friends that barring a direct stream of electricity or a deliberate stomp on the ground, the internal hard drive is not so fragile as one might expect. Unless one of its pins break. As in a fall…but keep your chin up! And back up that data! Which reminds me…
